St. Paul Chamber Orchestra Reveals Masterpieces by Two Czech Composers and a World Premiere

Joining her fellow artificial companions, a lively cyborg takes the stage at the Ordway Concert Hall for a special event. The night entails the global inaugural of “The Evolution of AI” for Chamber Orchestra and Electronics, co-commissioned by the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra (SPCO) and created by renowned composer and musician, Clarice Assad. Daria Tedeschi Adams, a charismatic violinist from SPCO, takes the reins to orchestrate a melodious night.

For the opening of the program, sixwind instrumentalists impeccably perform Leoš Janáček’s nostalgic “Mládí (Youth)” for Winds. The ensemble performs each sweeping pattern and fast-paced Allegro movement in harmony, forging an invigorating start to the evening.

Composer Assad charms the audience in her silver attire, as she flits around various electronic devices, creating an interesting juxtaposition between the sounds of traditional instruments and electronics. Assad’s human genius ensures that “The Evolution of AI” is a playful commentary on artificial intelligence rather than a product of it.

Following a brief recess, the orchestra returns to showcase Daria Tedeschi Adams’ unique interpretation of Bedřich Smetana’s Quartet No. 1 for Strings, “From My Life“. The arrangement captures the spirit of individuality with standout solos, whilst still maintaining the unity of the orchestra.
